Annabelle Spencer's life is every girl's dream. She has wonderful parents, great friends, and of course the perfect boyfriend, Jack Roberts. That all changes on her sixteenth birthday when her life comes crashing down around her. Her dream night turns into a nightmare when Jack is murdered right in front of her, and she's kidnapped by his murderer, Carter Thomas, a big time drug and arms dealer.
After ten months
of being with Carter, she's found, but the experience has totally changed her.
She's no longer the happy-go-lucky girl that everyone used to know and love;
she's now cold, hard and suffers from night terrors. It appears that Carter
broke not only her body, but her spirit too. A shadow of her former self, her
slogan for life is now: 'If you don't care about anything, then you have
nothing to lose'.
Carter is
currently serving time for the murder of Jack, a conviction that Anna helped
secure. But his retrial is coming up because some key evidence appears to have
been tampered with. Unbeknown to Anna, death threats are being received by her
father, the Senator. It appears that Carter is still interested in Anna and
will stop at nothing to get her back.
Ashton Taylor is
brought in to protect her. He's a newly qualified SWAT agent, a bright spark,
the agency's new golden boy. He is assigned undercover, posing as her
boyfriend. His job is to help her through college and keep her safe until the
end of the trial in eight months' time.
For three years
she has been the broken, damaged girl, refusing to feel emotion or pain, but
can Ashton help her rebuild her life and finally deal with the grief of losing
her childhood sweetheart? Will he be the one to make her see that life is, in
fact, worth living and that not all men will hurt her?
All the while,
the shadow of the trial looms over the both of them, taunting them, reminding
them that it isn't over yet. After all, Carter Thomas will stop at nothing to
be reunited with his 'Princess'.
Review:
Nothing left to
lose was a wonderful book. I was taken in from the first page and didn't want
to stop reading. The only thing I didn't like was it was so long. I understand
if the author was developing the relationship between Ashton and Anna, but much
of it could have been left out to make for a more condensed and fast paced
novel. It’s a great story that is about love and
redemption. A story that shows that everything can be fixed whether we think so
or not.
We are quickly introduced to Anna and jack who are out celebrating Anna's 16th birthday. Of course they both have fake Ids to get into the club they want to get into. They were interrupted by Carter Thomas who just wanted to get Anna in. She denied and continued with their evening. Pretty quickly, were thrown into it with Carter, a drug lord, murdering Jack and taking Anna away putting her through torture and hell.
Before everything happened, Anna was fun, loving and carefree. After the nightmare, she was nasty quiet and everyone could tell... lonely and damaged. She blamed everything on herself. She wouldn't let anyone get close to her. Unbeknownst to her, she had been receiving letters from Carter from his jail cell. She continually went through near guards. She would send them off, they would quit. She wanted nothing to do with them until her father; Senator Spencer brings in Ashton Taylor, a newly graduated SWAT agent. He was number one in his class and the senator wanted him.
Ashton took his job seriously and after meeting Anna he immediately felt the need to comfort her. He could see the pain in her eyes. Ashton is a strong intelligent and caring man. He does his job well and will do everything he can to make it go the right way. He always knew the right things to say. He has a bit of arrogance about him, but it wasn't an overwhelming arrogance.
Upon first meeting him, Anna wanted nothing to do with him of course. Even though Anna wants nothing to with him, he slowly starts making his way into her heart. She doesn't want it though. She doesn't want to lose anything or anyone again. Anna begins turning to Ashton without realizing it. She is comfortable with him, he makes her forget. They grow a lot closer than she would have liked but she knows that she needs him. Ashton slowly falls in love with her and tries to get her to understand that, but Anna has a wall up. She doesn't want to believe that he had fallen in love with her or her with him.

When Carter is
released from jail, things get harder for the newly formed couple. Anna pushes
Ashton further away than she ever has. Now she’s in more danger than she
originally was and it’s a race to save Anna… in all aspects… mind, body and
soul.
