Early Review for "If I Say Yes" by Brandy Jellum

If I Say Yes
Author: Brandy Jellum
Published: May 1st, 2014

Summary:

Elizabeth Lewis was the child of Hollywood’s darling couple, until her father murdered her mother.

Six years later, she has traded her flashy, luxurious lifestyle for one of safe anonymity as a literary agent. With a different name and appearance, Liza Winter is living the life of her dreams—one where she’s known for who she is instead of what her father did. Except her apartment should be condemned, her car only starts when it wants, she hates the romance genre she has been assigned, and the CEO’s deliciously attractive nephew is out to ruin her carefully laid plans.

Reid Harder has never met an obstacle he couldn’t overcome. When his new position in the romance department comes with a benefit his uncle didn’t mention, he decides to wage a war against the intelligent, beautiful Liza to destroy every argument she has for turning him down. Still, the closer he gets to winning the prize, the more he realizes that the woman is keeping secrets that may endanger not just her life but his.

Will Liza overcome her mistrust of Reid to reveal her secrets before he learns the truth and walks away? Or will a grudge-wielding apparition from her past make her the next deadly Hollywood headline?

Review:

** I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!!**

If I say yes is definitely a different book than I normally read. I loved the suspense of the book. It kept me going to want to see who was behind it all. I think I was a touch disappointed about why and who it was but it doesn't make me like the book any less.

After Elizabeth or Liza walks into see her mother murder by the hands of her father she just wants to forget it all. She changes her name and becomes a literary agent who seems to have sworn off guys for some reason (not telling you!! :-P)

Reid is the nephew to the owner of company that she works for and has an instant attraction to Liza. He knows what's in her file at work and he tries going by that to read her. He has witty charm and sarcasm and he also seems to have a dark side that we don't learn too much about. Reid slowly begins to break down her brick walls and prove to her that he isn't just a playboy.

Elias is Liza's best friend and he is a sweet heart. He's there for her and picks up the pieces when things hit the fan. He truly cares for her and in this case, it's true what they say about being friend zoned.

Before you know it you start thinking maybe it's not worth to keep a secret. Maybe we can't hide from our past. Letting it all hang out of course can make or break you, but no matter what you can't run.

I really want to know more about Reid and his past. The suspense and the romance kept me going and with a cliffhanger like that I can't wait to read the next book!

Review: Tempting the Bodyguard by J. Lynn

Tempting the Bodyguard
Author: J. Lynn
Published: May 12th, 2014

Summary:

He can protect her from everyone except himself.

Alana Gore is in danger. A take-no-prisoners publicist, her way with people has made her more than a few enemies over the years, but a creepy stalker is an entirely different matter. She needs a bodyguard, and the only man she can ask is not only ridiculously hot, but reputed to have taste for women that goes beyond adventurous.

Chandler Gamble has one rule: don't protect anyone you want to screw. But with Alana, he's caught between his job and his increasingly hard libido. On one hand, Alana needs his help. On the other, Chandler wants nothing more than to take the hot volcano of a woman in hand. To make her writhe in pleasure, until she's at his complete mercy.

She needs protection. He needs satisfaction. And the moment the line is crossed, all hell will break loose…

Review:

After reading 'Tempting the Best Man' I was ready to learn about the other two Gamble brothers. I was not disappointed. After waiting for 'Tempting the Bodyguard' I devoured the book. I read this book in one sitting and after learning more about Chandler... I'm having a hard time picking which one I like the best!!!

In 'Tempting the Bodyguard' we finally get to peak into the world of Chandler Gamble. Chandler is a snarky, egotistical, jerk but sometimes sweet guy. I was very curious to see of he was actually going to be able to 'tame' Alana. We first met Alana in 'Tempting the Player' the second book in the series. Honestly, she was a royal bitch and after that book I don't even know if I wanted her to have a happily ever after. But, alas, everyone should be able to find that. Alana is a tough bitch. She holds back her emotions because she thinks that's what she needs to do. She doesn't have anyone to turn to in times of trouble which I find sad.

When threatening emails that she had been receiving start getting worse she turn to chandler for help. He is the only one that she could think to turn too. Chandler is already hard for her after his encounter with her preciously in 'Tempting the Player' and this just makes his want for her more. Their connections grows throughout the book and even though I enjoyed every bit of it, i wish there had been a little bit more of a chase. Chandler continually talked a it chasing her but I felt in that aspect, it fell short for me.

The suspense part of the book was predictable and it seemed to have been forgotten about in a few parts. However, it didn't bother me at all because I just wanted to see how steamy Jennifer could make this book. The sexual tension before and then the actual display went far and above my expectations! I wasn't disappointed at all!

All in all, this book was exactly what I was looking for! I didn't think I would be able to like Alana, but I did and even the epilogue made me want to read more about her. She deserves more. I'm still having a hard time picking out who is my favorite but Chase is still my top choice and Chandler comes in at a very close second! All three of these boys deserves another book.

ON THE ROCKS Synopsis:

Love is best served on the rocks.

My roommates look really good naked. At least one of them does. I’m sure the other one does too, but I haven’t seen him without his pants on. Living with two guys wasn't something I’d ever considered, but the opportunity fell in my lap, and I’d have been crazy to turn it down.

College went by in a great big blur leaving me with less of a direction than I had going in. Add in a family that wanted nothing to do with me, and my post-college plans were less than clear. What’s a girl to do when she has nowhere else to turn? She moves to the Outer Banks and learns to bartend. After all, it was my horrible bartending skills that led me to my roommate’s bed and into his heart.

EXCERPT:

I heard the water in the sink running, and I assumed someone was brushing their teeth.

I knocked while pushing open the door. “I just need my—”

The rest of my words were lost as Macon turned toward me. There he was holding a toothbrush and wearing nothing. Absolutely nothing.

“Oh my god. I am so sorry.” I backed out without finding my brush.

“Can I help you?” His voice was amused. How was he amused?

“Why are you naked?”

“Because I just got out of the shower.”

I kept looking down. “But you were brushing your teeth.”

“I like to dry off before I get dressed. You should try it sometime.”

“That’s what a towel is for.” I heard the ping of the towel bar. I glanced up, half hoping he’d be covered and half hoping he wouldn’t be. He had a towel tied around his waist.

“I guess we’re even then.”

“Even?” I could barely think straight. I was still picturing Macon naked.

“Yeah, I walked in on you in a towel, now you’ve seen me baring it all. We’re good to go.”

“I wasn’t naked.”

He grinned. “So what you’re saying is now I’m the one with the extra points. Nice.”

“You’re crazy.”

“I am? You’re the one who opened the door without waiting for an answer, and what did you need anyway?”

“My brush,” I answered sheepishly. He was right, I did pretty much barge right in.

“Here you go,” he held out the brush.

I took it, and my hand brushed against his in the process. Even tiny touches from him got me. “Thanks, and sorry.”

“Not a problem, roomie.”

“Okay.”

“Is there anything else?”

“Oh, no. Nothing.” I backed out the rest of the way and closed the door. Could I get more embarrassing?

Review:

When I started reading, I was happily engrossed in the book. How Alyssa Rose Ivy made Carly, I really thought that there would have been more of a build up toward her relationship with Macon. Not every relationship goes from 0 – 60 in 5 – 10 pages.

Carly is funny sarcastic. She always seemed to have the right comeback. She didn’t seem immune to Macon’s charm, but she didn’t seem like the girl that was going to just fall head over heels for him so quickly. What Macon is able to do is get her to trust him. That made me love him more. Carly was in a bad place when she ended up at her brother’s house.

Colin seems like the great older brother anyone would want. He’s protective, but he also lets her make her own decisions. Maddy is a sweetheart. I love that she is a spunky bartender.  Brody, the other hot guy that Carly begins to live with proves that not all guys that are hot are egotistical. He’s sweet and his heart is in the right place. He seems more like the older brother type.

With stories revealed, new beginnings, and new roads to take this story is an awesome addition to the Mixology series. Overall, the book is definitely a good read. It’s quick and light and you’ll find yourself reading the whole book and not realizing it. I want to read Brody’s side of the story now. Even though he wasn’t in the book that much, he is one of my favorites.

Where There’s Smoke
Author: Elizabeth Lee
Publish Date: May 20th, 2014

Summary:

There is something to be said for letting go. Ryland Roberts knows that better than anyone. He'd let go of his ambitions, of his family and—most of all—of her. He'd perfected the art of putting his past behind him and accepted the fact that the town he wanted to leave in his rearview was the place where he was going to live out his days. But sometimes the past doesn't just go away. Sometimes it comes back to haunt you.

Piper Jameson convinced herself that she left for all the right reasons. She'd saved people by leaving—made sure that they weren't tainted by her rebellious ways. When her little sister asks her to come home and say goodbye to their ailing mother, she's forced to see that things aren't always as they seem. The people who she'd left behind might not have been saved at all.

In the amount of time it takes a bullet to travel from point A to point B, Piper and Ryland will have to put their feelings for each other aside and make a choice. Forced on the run with Piper's sister, they begin to understand that the future they thought was gone was never really lost.

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE Excerpt:

I stretched my arm out and placed a hand on the cool concrete, the grit and dirt sticking to my palm.  Such a contrast to the warmth I felt with Ryland firmly pressed up against me.  The curves of my backside fit perfectly against his long, lean frame, our skin heating up the chill around us.

The fall weather had descended upon our small Midwestern town almost overnight.  It seemed like only a week or two ago we had been wearing shorts and flip-flops.  Now it was jeans and jackets.  Well, actually, now it was nothing.

I felt my cheeks heat as I thought about what we had just done.  I wasn't embarrassed.  Far from it.  In fact, I'd never felt more sure about anything in my entire life as I was about what had just happened with Ry.

“That was incredible,” he whispered against my neck as he traced lazy circles on my shoulder with his fingertips.

“Yeah,” I breathed, rolling onto my back to look up at him.  The soft glow of an outdoor utility light crept through the open side of the airplane hangar, barely lighting up the space.  “Never imagined our first time being on a blanket spread out on a cold, hard floor, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

“Me too. Let’s get on that then,” he said with a wicked grin before he pressed his lips to mine.  Propping himself on one arm—his hand resting against the side of his head—he snaked his free hand under one of the flannel blankets he'd commandeered from an airplane parked beside us.

I liked this side of him.  The side that wasn't perfect and calculated.  The side that just did, said, and felt what he wanted.  He was literally feeling his way up my body—his hands smooth and rough all at the same time—sending all of my teenage hormones spiraling out of control.  We were living in the moment, which was exactly where I preferred to be.

“You know how much I love you, right?” His face became very serious, almost concerned.
“I wanted tonight to be special.  I thought we'd go back to my house after we looked at the planes.  My parents are gone and...”  He was back in his head, thinking about his meticulously thought-out evening.  Doubting his ability to be perfect.  He did this sometimes—overanalyzed things.  “It didn't go exactly as I planned, but—”

“It was perfect,” I assured him. “Plans, schmans.”  I pulled his face to mine, giggling, my lips barely grazing his.  “And I love you, too.”

That was the thing about Ryland—I saw a side of him that no one else saw.  I could probably say the same for him about me.  Until him, I’d never felt like I was going to amount to much, but he believed in me, even when I didn't—which was most of the time.  When I was with him, I didn't feel like I needed to do everything in my power to piss people off.  He made me want to stay in this Godforsaken town with a family that ignored my existence.  They ignored it until I did something wrong—which was about ninety percent of the time.  Then my stepfather made sure to let me just how worthless I was.

“So do you feel like a rebel?” I asked.  “This being your first breaking and entering and all.”

It had been his idea to sneak on to the airfield—something that was much more in my wheelhouse than his.  I was the one who usually threw caution to the wind.  He was the good boy.  The straight-A student.  The doting son.

“Oh yeah.” He laughed. “I'm a regular badass.  Nothing like walking through an open gate to an abandoned shed.”  He cast his arm out sarcastically in the vacant space above our heads.  Nothing but sheet metal and wooden beams.  A handful of airplanes were parked around us with a smattering of fuel cans, tools, and parachutes hanging from the walls.  “I'm not sure we actually broke into anything.  More like casually strolled in.”

We lived in a town where people left their front doors unlocked.  The kind of town where everyone knew everyone and all of their business.  Truitville. It was a place with a minimal crime rate.  I think that night, that's what we’d both thought: What's the worst that could happen?

“So what's next then, Clyde?  Wanna rob a bank?”

Review: Happenstance by Jamie McGuire

Happenstance
Author: Jamie McGuire
Published: May 9th, 2014

Summary:

#1 New York Times Bestseller Jamie McGuire returns to self-publishing with this page-turning YA account of Erin Easter, one of three Erins in the small senior class of rural Blackwell High School who not only share a first name, but also their birthday. Easter, raised by a neglectful single mom, keeps to herself and admires Weston Gates from afar. The other Erins, Erin "Alder" Alderman and Erin "Sonny" Masterson are the darlings of the community: daughters of the two wealthiest families in town, best friends, cheerleaders, and everything Easter isn't--and they never let her forget it. Alder has even claimed Weston since the 8th grade.

Weston is a well-liked star athlete, and the son of two prominent attorneys. He struggles daily with the pressures of living up to his family name and secretly empathizes with Easter's feeling that she belongs somewhere else; in a different life. Not until he begins sneaking nights out with Easter does he gain the courage to buck expectations and acknowledge his feelings ... both for his future, and for her.

A shocking tragedy rocks the tiny town, and Easter's life is turned upside down in the best way possible. But when the truth is revealed and everything she thinks she wanted falls into her lap, life only becomes more complicated.

Review:

I just finished Happenstance by Jamie McGuire and I think I'm a bit disappointed. Everyone kept saying what a good book it was and it's just okay in my eyes. There's not much I can say overall without giving away the plot twist, but I'm going to give it a whirl.

I know it's a novella and there is only so much you can do with a one but it fell flat for me. After the book hit a certain point it felt rushed. There is so much in this book that it should have been longer. A lot of it was left open ended and that was a bit discouraging.

The characters were very stereotypical and annoying. You have the common and overused bullies of the school that pick on the underprivileged main character, the awesome best friend that stands up for you and then the love interest who is privileged and feels 'empty' because he can't be himself. It all felt done before.

Erin Easter seemed like a decent character and when the 'twist' finally happens it felt like she changed toed rapidly and was out of character. Frankie, Erin's best friend was great and she definitely was a nice touch to the book giving it some humor. Weston was the privileged boy who had everything but felt like he had nothing. He was a good character overall though and he didn't aggravate me too much. The other two Erin's were just nasty and bitchy teen cheerleaders who felt like they had to put Easter down because they had nothing better to do.

I'm not that impressed with the book but because I'm a book lover I'll probably continue with the series when the next book comes out. I’m always impressed with Jamie’s work so I hope these books get better. In the end, it's an alright book. If you want something short and predictable read this book.

Where There’s Smoke
Author: Elizabeth Lee

Review:

Wow!!! When I read the summary for "Where There's Smoke" I instantly knew I wanted to read it! I couldn't have been happier for do so. This book had the right amount of romance and suspense and it didn't feel overdone.

I loved the characters right away! Piper, the female lead wasn't the good two shoes girl that never did anything wrong. She's that girl that stands up for herself, takes chances, and lives life. Of course there is the background that could have something to do with it, but it doesn't matter. Not all girls are innocent and foolproof. Piper was also the girl that wanted to do what was best for the people around her. She fell in love with someone that she wasn’t expecting. When things don’t happen the way we think they will, we will do anything for the people we love, whether it’s for family or a person that we are in love with.

That goes for Ryland also. When a catastrophe hits the small town or Truitville, Ryland does the unthinkable and stands up for Piper putting his life on hold. Ryland is shy and caring. He’s a sweet and he’s not one of the typical, ‘I think I’m hot’ guys. I loved this. It gets tiring reading about these types of guys all the time. There are definitely things that he did that I wish he didn’t, but not everyone is perfect. Overall, I thought these two characters were developed nicely, but I would have liked to get a little more of them.

Ryland and Piper as a couple are awesome!!! They are a fun couple that brings something different out of each other. They definitely have the chemistry together and they don’t have to try hard for you to see how they feel for each other. The romance aspect was fun and light and it wasn’t overdone. Some scenes can leave a bad taste in your mouth and can also be overabundant, but these scenes were tasteful and perfect.

Throughout this book, you follow the journey of these two. They learn that their actions do have consequences. They learn that through heartache, you can still find love. Mostly is that even though you may be broken, you can heal and you can rise above the hardships that have come your way. They also learn that not everything is as it seems and it comes down to protecting Piper’s sister, Hadley and each other. Hadley, herself, is an interesting character and when I finally put two and two together I was a little disgruntled. However, it didn’t throw me off the book. I can’t wait to see more of character develop in the next book, “There’s Fire”.

Would I recommend this book to anyone? YES!!! It has everything in place to be a great book. It brought me in from the beginning and I didn’t want to stop reading. This was definitely a great book from Elizabeth Lee!
